Emergency and exit lighting is used in a wide range of commercial and industrial buildings. Almost all rely on batteries for back-up power. EXITCYCLE is a Product Stewardship scheme where organisations commit to responsibly disposing of their end-of-life emergency lighting batteries in an effort to reduce waste and recover valuable materials.

In 2015, the peak body for Australia’s lighting industry partnered with the Queensland Government to divert emergency and exit lighting batteries from landfill. Following this successful, 12 month pilot program, EXITCYCLE was rolled out nationally, and has since helped drive up the recycling rates of end-of-life emergency lighting batteries nationwide.
