FluoroCycle, an Australian Government accredited voluntary product stewardship scheme, seeks to increase the national recycling rate of end-of-life mercury-containing lamps. Lamp recycling can help reduce the amount of mercury being sent to landfill. The scheme targets the commercial and industrial sectors where the bulk of waste lamps are generated. Signatories (Commercial Users) are awarded Signatory status when they commit to recycle their end-of-life mercury-containing lamps. There is no fee to apply.
It is estimated that approximately 90% of waste mercury-containing lamps end up in landfill. Once mercury is released into landfill it can spread to the wider environment. Mercury is a neurotoxin and is dangerous to humans and animals. Contact details for lamp recyclers and collectors are listed on the FluoroCycle website.
